It is synonymous to the growth of the media industry in Singapore. In the 1930s, the first broadcasting station by the British Malayan Broadcasting Corporation was set up on Caldecott hill. The company, now known as MediaCorp, is still located in this area. Hence, the name has become a metonym for the local television and broadcasting industry. It is also referred to as "The Hill" by the local media and MediaCorp employees.
